New Year, New Blooms
My Christmas Cactus is blooming. This cactus started in California with my grandmother probably 50 years ago or more. She kept it on her front porch. After she passed away, my mother brought it to Virginia and grew it inside. She gave it to me about 8 years ago. It did well on my front porch and bloomed every Thanksgiving – until this year.
I left the plants to the care of my dad and his caregivers. They watered it excessively and I had to intervene a couple of times to rescue it. Thanksgiving came and went with no blooms. It was fitting since my mother recently passed away on the 30th Anniversary of my grandmother’s death. I figured the trauma of too much water caused the cactus not to bloom, but here we are. New year and new blooms. One old bloom is withering and one beautiful bloom open with a few more buds.
